Mark your calendars to join scouts from all over Istrouma Area on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10am to 4pm at the Baton Rouge Scout Shop.  They will be making ornaments! Refreshments will also be provided.

Holiday Mail for Heroes

Cub Scout Pack 164 will be sending cards to the American Red Cross for them to distribute this holiday season. This is a great time to teach our scouts about the sacrifices that each member of the military makes by having to be away from their family and friends during the holidays. You can buy a pack of cards, use leftovers from previous years, or any that you have to fill out and send. Cards do not need envelopes!! I will be collecting cards on Monday, Dec 2nd before the parade and I will mail them to the American Red Cross.  Please visit the link below for more information!!

Card Guidelines:

Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country.

Please observe the following guidelines to ensure a quick reviewing process:

• Ensure that all cards are signed.
• Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.
• Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters.
• Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.
• Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process.
• Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors.
• If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution.

Operation Christmas Child

 

Loranger Pack 164 and Troop 164 will be teaming up this year for a service project. We will be packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. National OCC collection week is Nov. 18^th-25^th. There is no limit to the number of boxes that a scout/family can pack. There is no limit to the number of items to include in the shoe boxes. Dollar Tree and Dollar Stores carry a great selection of $1-$3 items that work great for this project. There are 3 age groups….2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. Boxes are due by our Nov. 18th meeting.

Suggested items:

• Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as dolls, toy trucks, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.
• School Supplies: Pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
• Hygiene Items: Toothbrush, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.
• Accessories: T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries).
• A Personal Note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. If you include your name and address, the child may write back.
• Do Not Include: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.
• Handmade items such as scarves, pillow case dresses, mittens, hats, etc….are welcome too

How it works:

1.      Take a shoe box any size and wrap the lid and bottom separate, or you can buy a plastic shoebox and decorate with stickers/markers. (Wrapping is optional)

2.      Choose to buy for a boy or girl…and an age category. 

3.      Pack items in your box/boxes and place a rubber band around entire box to keep lid attached.

4.      Place label on side of box and check which age category you bought for.

The Car:

 

Scouts need a cardboard box that is big enough for him to stand up inside and carry. It can have an open top, or cut-out holes for arms and head. Cars should ideally be between 24”and 36” long, about 12” high and between 12” and 18” wide, but there are no strict rules for car size, so make it as big or small as you like as long as your scout can wear it.

**Keep in mind that the cars will likely end up damaged (if not completely destroyed) by the time the race is over.
 
The Race:

The race consists of 4 laps around a designated course.

The first pit stop is “cleaning the windshield.”  The pit crew has to wipe off the driver's face/goggles.

The second pit stop is “refueling.” The Cub Scout must drink a small cup of water through a straw.

The third pit stop is “tire changing” The Cub Scout’s shoes must be taken off, his socks must be changed from one foot to the other, and his shoes be put back on. Scouts must wear tennis shoes. No slip-on shoes allowed to make it fair for all scouts!!

Each scout must have a pit crew consisting of 1 or 2 family members or adult friends.

Races will be grouped by dens.

Boys can wear goggles but they are not required.

Races will be in heats of  3 boys at a time

The winner of each race is the first to cross the finish line (the scout, not the car!)

This is a friendly competitive race so that all scouts will have a good time. As with all cub scout events good sportsmanship is expected.

No "bumper cars" or "crashing".....there should be no physical contact with another driver!! Please keep it safe and fun for all!!!

How to Build Your "Cub-Anapolis" Car

• Pick the right size cardboard box to fit the scout.

Normally a box that is 12"-18" wide, 12" high and 24"-36" long. (A copy paper box is great.)
Body of car must be constructed of cardboard.
Use a box that fits around the boy without being either too snug or too loose.

• No metal or glass materials may be used.
• Cut out the top and the bottom of the box so the scout can stand in the box and pick it up to his waist.
• Leave about 2" of the top and bottom at each end to strengthen the box.
• Make 4 wheels for the car.

• Assemble car with glue or tape. Please assemble the car in a manner to be safe for the scout.
• Each scout will need to decorate the box to look like a race car. (BE CREATIVE) Construction paper, paint, tape, aluminum foil and markers are all great things to have on hand to spur creativity. Colored paper plates make great wheels. Be sure no dangerous materials (such as glass or metal) are used. Please see pictures for some ideas!!
